Kilz 2 Primer Review - Why We Like It and When You Should Use It
Help! I used Smart Prime thinned 20% and applied with HVLP On my stained cabinet doors that I deglossed with KrudKutter Gloss Off and green scrubby pad (no physical sanding). It's been 6 days and I can still scratch off the Smart Prime with my finger nail. I know it says 7 days to full cure so maybe it won't be an issue tomorrow but I'm worried. It went on pretty thin in most places so I'm about to do a second coat but wondering if I should use SW Extreme Bond primer over the Smart Prime, and if that would help with cohesion? And maybe I won't thin down.
So there's no reason to take the doors outside and use Zinsser B I N Shellac? Like so many other pro cabinet painters and furniture people say they do. I was ready to do that before he said to use Smart Prime.
I made it through the whole video and you did a magnificent job with the video and the cabinets
Very helpful. Watched all 36 minutes 🎉
👌
This was so helpful! Thanks for all the tips!! Also, what color white is the topcoat?
Great video! Thank you!
Great video thanks
Why didn't you take off the doors on this video?
I did it free for a friend. He had new hinges on order, so I decided to save a TON of time and not remove the doors. You can get a perfect finish with the doors on if you need to!
Ok I got my 5000 was all set but I was wanting new counter tops, they just got in now 😮it’s 100 degrees Fahrenheit in my garage. How do you handle that. I’m waiting. Following you from my armchair in Louisiana, little town called Bastrop.
Ugh! Way Too Hot For Me!! Sorry Jay, I don't handle 100 at all! :)
I wonder if I can do this process on a cabinet that the old paint is coming off?
I don’t see why not. Just make sure to sand thoroughly before.
Shower cap for protecting from splash back on your hair might be an option 😊
I’ve actually thought about that. Maybe buying a bunch of shower caps!
Thank you, I already learned so much from watching your two videos. Could you tell me how much should I expect to pay for a project like this (kitchen cabinets)
Hiring it out, $4,000 - $7,000 depending on who you hire and size of your kitchen. DIY - $300-$500 for materials and an extra $250 for a Flexio 5000 sprayer if you need a sprayer. You can buy everything at DIYPaintingSupply.com and save 15% with this code: UA-cam-SAVE15
Great video, planning on getting a paint gun and getting my kitchen cabinets painted!
If you get the Flexio 5000 you can save 15% with this code at DIYPaintingSupply.com “UA-cam-SAVE15” diypaintingsupply.com/products/flexio-5000
Very informative. Thank you.
nice video. Does spray paint easily fall off and get scratched?
Not if you prep and prime properly. Make sure to sand everything before priming and use a good bonding primer.
@@diypaintingwhere do you locate? you paint so nice. it is possible to find you help me paint? thanks
The checklist you have is fantastic. So cool you're sharing that process with your followers.
Thanks! Glad you like it!
Hey followed your advice on the choice of paint. And thank you so much! It is an amazing product 👏
Your so good with the brush :) Thank you!
Yes I did watch the whole video. You have done an amazing transformation in their kitchen. I'm sure they will be overjoyed! Question; I have the cheap cupboards with the pressed board I guess (?) Over time they have swelled up and split open. There are raised spots along the bottom of the doors. Is there a way to redo them or is it time for different fronts?
I can't watch any more, has beautiful cabinets and soon they Will be god awful White, stomach churning, that is #1 thing that drives me away from a home.
I watched 36 minutes of your beautiful white cabinet paint job. Working up the nerve to do mine. Thanks for the tips.
I really enjoyed watching this video, I’m gonna try to attempt to do my cabinets white this was very helpful 😊
Thank you for sharing the video. I watched the hole vid, im doing my first kitchen cupboards respray job. Any tips? 😅
Geeez that’s a lot of work! What do you charge for that?
Roughly $5-$6,000
Nice work! It looks great ❤ 👍 👏 👏
Ryan, this is such incredible content. I live in Australia and followed your instructions to a tee and it worked out perfectly on a test board. The question I have is if you have any tips for covering a ceiling.
Thanks for the compliment! For prepping ceilings, you'll want a medium tack wide tape (at least 2") so that you don't pull texture off the ceiling and have room to press one side tight close to the tops of the cabinets and tuck some paper or plastic on the other end. I like this tape here: diypaintingsupply.com/products/painters-tape-medium-tack Then, you'll want to use some 12" paper or plastic tucked on the other side of the tape. Easiest to see it in action here: ua-cam.com/video/m4BLKPCt1YA/v-deo.htmlsi=tDGT6eiZfHzpOMBV&t=619 OR another option is pre-taped low tack tape / plastic. This stuff works great and will cover your ceiling perfectly: diypaintingsupply.com/products/pre-taped-masking-film The last option is to repaint your ceiling after painting the cabinets. I often do this. Since I've already got the kitchen super prepped, it can be really quick to repaint the ceiling. Plus, most kitchen ceilings could use a fresh coat of paint since they are the first to get dirty from cooking. Good luck with your project!
I watched all 36 minutes as well. Thank you for taking the time to post these videos. I was seriously thinking about buying new cabinets but now I see I have options and probably for a whole lot cheaper so thank you 👍
I watched the whole thing! I would love to do this to my kitchen!
I’m ready to get my cabinets done after seeing your video thank you
Absolutely beautiful , watched from start to finish amazing job done
Need a turntable for the doors. Save you some handling. Great vid!!
Located in the midwest, humid summers. Two questions. What season would you recommend painting kitchen cabinets, oak raised panel? Second, would you caulk the door panels? If so when and with what? I quess that is three questions.
Great questions. I actually live in MN and last week was SUPER humid. I was using Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane last week, which is temperature and humidity dependant for drying. It took SO LONG to dry! Not great for production work (thankfully I wasn't worried about speed since I was filming for DIY). So the more humid it is out, the longer your drying times are going to be with most DIY friendly products. But, as long as you're not in a rush, this really isn't an issue. Last week, I just had to accept that after every coat I sprayed, I had to go home and let them dry over night. In winter in MN, I can easily get two coats on in a day, which is awesome. But some people need to use their garage for drying space if they don't have a large kitchen or build a drying rack, and that can be hard in the winter as well. Probably the perfect time is fall. You can still use your garage if needed and humidity is low. Caulking door panels. In theory, if you caulk your door panels, they could crack over time as the different pieces of wood expand and contract at different rates. Because of this, some painters will not cualk these panels as they don't want to be responsible for something that really isn't their fault. In reality though, if you use a high quality caulk, it probably won't ever crack. AND it looks so much better when you do caulk the panels. Worst case scenario, you can get hairline cracks where the panel meets the frame and you may need to recaulk it years down the road. I recommend caulking it. Best caulk for this, Sherwin Williams Power House. Power House was designed for interior woodwork with high expansion and contraction. I use this and have never had a call about cracking. So, here's my opinion. It looks way better caulked. But only caulk it if you are willing to use the best caulk available, then you won't have issues. Power House is roughly $10 / tube but worth it.
@@diypainting Thanks, very humid in Wisconsin too. What is the sequence. Prime, caulk, then topcoat? or Prime, caulk, prime the caulk and then topcoat?
Very instructive video. Yesterday, the DIY kitchen cabinet spray kit and Wagner I ordered from your company arrived in the mail and I'm looking forward to getting started this summer. I like the way you cover all the steps that we must do in order to get professional looking results. Thank you!
Good luck on your project! Hope it turns our great. If you get a chance, I'd love to see the before and after's when you're all done!!
I did stay for the whole video. Great job! We are going to be doing our cabinets soon maybe in the fall and you had some great tips! Loved the drying rack!
Looks great! Love watching your videos and they really helped me with my first attempt with painting cabinets!
Good video! The only thing I still use masking tape for is when painting base trim in a carpeted room. I use the masking tape to protect the carpet, and take it up as soon as the paint dries. Since straight lines and bleed through are not a issue, it works for me.

Amazing job.... What a difference. Thanks for taking the time to show your work.
Love your technique. What a beautiful finish!
just watched the whole thing, love to see pros do something before i have to do something because its alot faster and more forgiving. THANKS
Im completely removeing the lead paint from a 100 year old wood sided house and sanding afterwards. A lot of the sideing is old long leaf yellow pine some boards have alot of pitch and sap. Ive herd slow drying oil base stain blocking primer is best wood you think that or go another way
Thank you for sharing your expertise to the world. I'm a DIYer and is in the process of painting the NEW doors of my kitchen cabinets. I replaced the old doors with a newly made shaker doors which I made from scratch. My take away from your video is: to use a satin finish, Benjamin Moore brand. I initially thought of using gloss finish for easy clean up. I also learned (from you) that I can use 20%water as an extender instead of the M1 paint extender. My question is: I'm gonna be using an airless sprayer instead of the compressor type sprayer. Will I get the same smooth "car-like" finish result? (BTW I'll be using the HOMERIGHT C800971 Super Finish Max HVLP) thank you in advance for any advise!
I have used this sprayer for painting baseboards, doors and trim for whole homes. It’s a great solution and Graco products rock!
Hey, great video I watched the entire video, and it was very informative. I'm getting ready to paint my kitchen cabinets myself. Your video will help me out tremendously. Thanks! I will be sure to share it with others!
Didn’t show anything on set ip
I have a maple kitchen and have been sort of considering painting the cabinets. A couple of years ago I painted some box store cabinets with BM Advance using the Flexio 5000. The good news is that I ended up with a great smooth finish. But it was painful to get there. I did thin the BM about 20%, more than I expected to. I used the detail sprayer and had lots of trouble. Even after thinning, the paint seemed to be nearly drying before it hit the cabinet doors. (This is a dry climate and I only worked early AM when it was cool--I was in my garage). I resanded a lot and started over. Ultimately I moved the painting op into my basement where it was chilly and maybe a bit more humid. I had no trouble after that. Have you encountered this before? Would I have had this issue if I had used the bigger sprayer part that you did? Any suggestions?
Thank you for this video. I really need this question answered. I have already painted white cabinets. Do I need to prime them to repaint them white. They are builder grade painted when our home was built. Thank you!!
If the old paint is in good shape, you can scuff sand them and go straight to the top coat. If the paint is in bad shape, a primer is always a good idea.
Well done, thanks.
Using SW Emerald Urethane for Cabinets. Do you recommend thinning with Flexio 5000?
Yes, I just used it on another job and 20% thinning was needed for the flexio 5000 to properly atomize.
Just unsure cause SW doesn’t recommend thinning but I’ve seen ppl do 5-20%. Just unsure how it affects the chemicals of the paint or “finish”.
